MIS-AGRO® Citrus Harvesting Robot: Managing Harvest with AI, Not Intuition

MIS-AGRO® Citrus Harvesting Robot: Managing Harvest with AI, Not Intuition

The Right Fruit at the Right Time

With rising labor requirements, agriculture needs more efficient field-level solutions for harvesting. In citrus production especially, picking the right fruit at the right time is critical for product quality, waste rates and operational efficiency. Traditional methods rely largely on human experience, which can cause ripeness differences to be missed and harvest data to go unrecorded.

MIS-AGRO® turns citrus harvesting from an intuition-driven operation into an intelligent system managed by artificial intelligence, 3D image processing and robotics. The system detects fruit on the tree with 3D depth sensors and analyzes each fruit’s position, size, color characteristics and relationship with surrounding branches.

Selective Harvesting with Artificial Intelligence

MIS-AGRO® detects every fruit using deep-learning models based on CNN, ResNet, U-Net and SAM. The AI algorithms process image data for fruit detection, segmentation and ripeness assessment. HSV color-space analysis determines whether each fruit meets harvest criteria, so the system picks only fruit ready for harvest and leaves unripe fruit on the tree, helping to reduce post-harvest waste.

Gripping Without Damage

Robotic motion-planning algorithms generate the optimal approach angle for the 6-axis robot arm. The force-controlled robotic hand applies an appropriate gripping force to each fruit, grasping it without damage, picking it safely and transferring it to the collection unit. This minimizes skin damage and stem breakage. This precise gripping capability is built on the tactile robotic hand technology developed by MIS Automation.

3D Vision for Complex Orchard Conditions

MIS-AGRO®’s 3D vision is a decisive advantage in complex orchard conditions. The fruit’s position in space is computed while accounting for variables such as sunlight, shadows, foliage density and varying fruit heights. With a 3D point cloud, a separate decision is made for each fruit, delivering stable harvest performance under variable, uncontrolled field conditions.

5G Connectivity and Digital Twin

The system can be supported with real-time data transfer and remote monitoring over a 5G connectivity infrastructure. Every harvest operation and every fruit’s location is recorded, generating data that feeds the orchard’s digital twin. Growers can use this data to manage yield analysis, harvest performance and crop development in a more measurable way.

How It Works

MIS-AGRO® runs an end-to-end autonomous flow in five steps:

  • Image Capture — the tree and fruit are scanned with a 3D depth camera
  • Ripeness Analysis — HSV color analysis and deep learning decide on each fruit
  • Pose Estimation — the fruit’s position and optimal approach angle are determined
  • Robotic Picking — the force-controlled hand grasps the fruit without damage
  • Transfer — the fruit is safely moved to the collection unit

The Value It Brings to the Field

  • High accuracy: a separate decision per fruit via HSV color analysis and 3D point cloud
  • Low waste: only ripe fruit is picked; unripe fruit stays on the tree
  • Sustainability: fully electric, solar-panel-supported energy infrastructure
  • Traceability: a digital twin of the orchard via 5G data transfer

Frequently Asked Questions

Is MIS-AGRO® used only for citrus?
The system is developed for citrus harvesting; its core technology (3D vision, ripeness analysis, force-controlled gripping) has an architecture that can be adapted to different fruits and orchard conditions.

How does it distinguish ripe fruit from unripe fruit?
Deep-learning models detect and segment the fruit, then HSV color-space analysis assesses whether it meets the ripeness criteria; only fruit that meets the criteria is picked.

Does it damage the fruit?
The force-controlled robotic hand applies an appropriate gripping force to each fruit and senses the moment of contact, minimizing skin damage and stem breakage.

How can I use the orchard data?
Every harvest operation and fruit location is recorded; this data, transferred over 5G, builds the orchard’s digital twin and enables yield and performance analysis.

The Orchards of the Future, in the Field Today

In the orchards of the future, harvest decisions will be driven not by experience alone but by data, artificial intelligence and autonomous robotics. MIS-AGRO® reduces dependence on manual labor while easing heavy, repetitive workloads, offering a more predictable, traceable and efficient harvest.
