Palletizing or Depalletizing? Differences and the Shared Challenge

Palletizing is stacking products onto a pallet at the end of the line; depalletizing is unloading from a pallet at goods-in or the start of the line. Their shared challenge is that the layout is not always the same and box surfaces (glossy stretch film, dark colors, variable print) can be difficult for vision. Fixed-program systems cannot manage this variability, whereas combining 3D depth with a 2D image reliably extracts a box’s position and edges.

A typical robotic palletizing cell consists of a feed conveyor, an overhead 3D camera, a robot arm with a suitable gripper (vacuum or pinch), a pallet-positioning rig and safety-zone/fencing components. Because the stacking pattern is defined in software as a recipe, switching to a new product requires selecting a recipe rather than changing mechanical fixtures.

Can mixed-SKU pallets be built?
Yes. With 3D vision and software-based stacking recipes, different box sizes can be arranged on a single pallet in a planned way.

Vacuum or pinch (clamp) gripper?
It depends on the product surface: vacuum for flat, sealed boxes; pinch/clamp grippers work more reliably on porous boxes or sacks.

Will it integrate with my existing line?
